The Basque Country is a region in northern Spain. Like neighbouring Asturias, the coastline is green and hilly with some beautiful beaches. It’s perhaps most notable for San Sebastian. Famous for its beaches and Michelin-starred restaurants, it offers a little bit of glamour. Also increasing in popularity is the port city of Bilbao with the addition of the Guggenheim putting the city firmly on the tourist map.
From Madrid Atocha, you can reach the region by train with direct services Bilbao, the region’s biggest city. However, as the country’s high-speed network hasn’t yet fully made it to the north so the journey can take over five hours.
After arriving in Bilbao, the easiest way to get around the region is with a car. But if you’d rather take public transport, there are buses and trains you can take from Bilbao to other destinations including San Sebastian.
