Best in Figueres Travel
Figueres is a city in the Girona province in Catalonia. The city is best known for being home to the Dali Theatre-Museum. It’s the birthplace of Salvador Dali and it’s for this reason that he chose to build his museum here. In addition to housing the largest collection of his works, Dali was integral to the design of the museum. And like his work, it is true to the surrealist movement he helped to build. Even if you’re not a fan of the artist, the Dali Theatre-Museum is one of the most fascinating museums in the world. Given that there aren’t really any other tourist attractions in this small city, the museum is one of the most visited in Spain. When you go, don’t miss the Dali Jewels Museum. Although tickets include entrance to it, it has a separate entrance and can easily be missed out.
Outside of the museum, the city is a comfortable one to stay in for tourists with a good choice of restaurants and accommodation available. The Sant Ferran Castle, which is located just northwest of the city, is also worth a visit.
Best beyond Figueres
Figueres is just 20kms from the stretch of coast referred to as the Costa Brava. The nearest beaches are can be found around the Gulf of Roses. On either side of the bay at Roses and at Empuries, you’ll find the remnants of a Roman fortress. Both originate from the fourth and third centuries, respectively. They also have some lovely beaches too.
A little further from Roses, you’ll find more beaches at secluded coves around Montjoi and Cap Norfeu. Cadaques further north of here is another picturesque beach town and fishing village. It is also an important stop for Dali fans as it is as his former house here has been turned into a museum (the Dali House-Museum).
For nature and wildlife lovers, Aiguamolls de l’Emporda Natural Park and Cap de Creus Natural Park are both standout attractions.
50kms south of Figueres, Girona Airport is the nearest airport. The airport and Figueres Station (the train station in the city centre) have car hire services. Both are good options if you are ending your trip here and need to return a car hire.
