Madrid to Antequera

You can travel by train from Madrid to Antequera in Andalucia from Madrid Atocha Station. However, you’ll need to go to Antequera-Santa Ana Station first, which is about 17kms west of the city. The train station is one of the stops on the high-speed AVE trains that link Madrid to Malaga Station. AVE runs around 5 daily direct services going from Madrid to Antequera-Santa Ana Station with an average journey time of 2 hours and 20 minutes. ALTARIA also runs a direct service from Madrid to Antequera-Santa Ana. It has 2 daily services with a slightly longer journey time of 2 hours and 50 minutes.

From Antequera-Santa Ana, you can connect to MD trains that go direct to Antequera-Ciudad, which is located within the city. The journey time only takes around 20 minutes. However, the service doesn’t always conveniently match up to trains arriving from Madrid to Antequera-Santa Ana so make sure you check the timetables in advance. Unfortunately, there isn’t a whole heap on offer by Antequera-Santa Ana Station.

Although it’s not quite as easy to reach Antequera from Madrid, you will be treated to a fab city when you do arrive. The city boasts a number of architectural gems including the hilltop Alcazaba, bull ring and several churches such as the Iglesia del Carmen. Another standout attraction in Antequera are the Dolmens. There are three of these megalithic tombs in total. Two date from 2500BC and another from 18ooBC. You’ll also find a great dining and drinking scene with some great tapas bars.

Antequera also makes a fantastic base for exploring the captivating El Torcal de Antequera Nature Reserve. Located about 15kms south of the city, El Torcal de Antequera features a spectacular karst landscape full of otherworldly rock formations. Activities available in the reserve including hiking, cycling and climbing.

Antequera is located 60kms north of Malaga and beaches on the Costa del Sol. Popular beach resorts that are easily accessible from Antequera include Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Torre de Mar. Malaga also has some fab beaches and is a vibrant city to explore with some fantastic cultural attractions.  100kms east of Antequera, Granada is also a straightforward journey and a must-see city.

Malaga Airport and Granada Airport are the nearest airports to Antequera. Both have car hire services. And even if you’ve collected a car hire elsewhere, your supplier may allow you to return it at either airport.
